Dear 7th Grade Students and Parents,
We need and want your child at all field trips
We carefully plan trips that create opportunities to deepen our understanding of the expedition concepts. This is why we expect each and every child to participate in field trips throughout the year. It is in the handbook that it is an expectation of each child.
Immortal Life of Herietta Lacks
We know that students have these books at home! Please make sure your child brings it to school for ELA class tomorrow. Thanks for the help!
We are excited to be reading The Immortal Life Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot during this trimester’s expedition. This narrative nonfiction book has amazing reviews and has been on the New York Times top ten list for some time. It will nicely tie together the science and social studies content of our expedition.
We are aware that the book will challenge our 7th graders as readers. As teachers we will help your child navigate the text and scaffold the material accordingly. We are skipping certain chapters due to time constraints and content. Parents can choose to, paper clip, staple or cut out the aforementioned chapters. Not reading these chapters will not adversely affect the value our students will get from this book. We encourage you to read the book if you have the time; we know it will stimulate great conversation. If your child is curious and wants to read the chapters we have “deselected,” you might want to read them as well so that you can field any questions!
Chapters that we will skip: 1, 10, 15, 19, 21
Umstead Camping Trip:
Dates: September 29th-October 1st Cost: $30
If you are interested in begin a chaperone, please be on the look out for a sign-up genius later on this week.
We are very excited to announce our 7th grade camping trip this fall at Umstead. Each student will be responsible for turning in $30 dollars. It is our hope that all campground fees, food, and resources will be covered by this fee. If you and your family are avid campers, please contact Jess ([email protected]). We will need all hands on deck to make this trip a success. We are looking for any families willing to donate: cookstoves, tents, tarps, etc.

Dear Parents and 7th Grade Students,
Welcome Back! We are excited to being the 2015-2016 school year. Each week our team will send a Monday letter. We ask that you read the Monday letter in its entirety; it is a wealth of information!
Housekeeping:
Daily attendance and sufficient sleep is a critical part of your child’s success in school. We begin our first class at 8:15 a.m. and ask that students to be here at least five minutes before. Research has shown that multiple absences impact a child’s ability to grow academically and be successful. Also, eight hours of rest nightly is critical to their learning. Please minimize absences and tardies as much as possible and make sure your child is getting sufficient rest.
Missing Work:
Please check your child’s school agenda/planner for any missing work. If your child has a missing assignment, his/her teacher will make a note.

We want You! (well...we really want the $100 you earned)
We asked each student to earn $100 to put towards his or her big 7th grade field trip. Please have your student bring earned money in, in an envelope with her or his name on it.

Umstead Camping Trip:
Dates: September 29th-October 1st Cost: $30
We are very excited to announce our 7th grade camping trip this fall at Umstead. Each student will be responsible for turning in $30 dollars. It is our hope that all campground fees, food, and resources will be covered by this fee. If you and your family are avid campers, please contact Jess ([email protected]). We will need all hands on deck to make this trip a success. We are looking for any families willing to donate: cookstoves, tents, tarps, etc.
Scholastic Reading Club- Paper order forms will come home monthly and should always be returned to Katie. The year’s first order forms will go home sometime this week and will be due on September 3! You may always place your order ONLINE at www.scholastic.com (Parents>Order From Reading Club Flyer) using our specific code: LHJDG. Scholastic ordering is always completely optional!
Minimum Weekly Requirements:
Each week we will send home a list of upcoming assignments for the week. It is important to note that these are the *minimum* number of assignments for which your child will be responsible. As the week progresses, students will most likely be asked by teachers to add to this list of minimum weekly requirements. They will keep track of ALL assignments in their agenda.
ELA NOTE: In keeping with our promise to make reading a priority, we do not often assign homework for English Language Arts class. However, we do EXPECT that students will read for at least 30 minutes each evening in order to reach their required goal of reading FORTY (40) books this school year.
